THE first cohort of learners into Barnsley Council’s Social Work Academy were welcomed into the organisation this week.
The scheme, which was launched in February, is a new initiative that aims to provide a high-quality and consistent programme of learning for children’s social workers.
Members of the academy will undertake a detailed four-week induction with the council’s team in the practice development hub, enjoying learning opportunities, building practice knowledge and developing relationships, leading to the gradual allocation of their first cases to make sure they feel fully supported and prepared.
Coun Trevor Cave, cabinet spokesperson for children’s services, said: “We recognise the vital role social workers play, which is why we have transformed our children’s social work offer to make sure we provide the best support, training and development for our staff.
“It’s brilliant to see so many students return to be a part of the academy after finishing university, as well as so many young people looking to join this important profession thanks to the partnership work with Barnsley College.
“This clearly highlights how the supportive culture we’ve developed in our social care teams is helping us grow and retain local talent.
“I wish our new starters all the best during their time in the academy and look forward to hearing more about their journeys.”
