A WOMAN who wants to take pride in where she lives wants to raise funds to help clean the sign on the outskirts of the village.

Carole Shelley moved to Elsecar two years ago from Birmingham, and since then has wanted to clean the large Elsecar sign that sits near her house.

The sign, which has the village name engraved on a large boulder, has become overgrown and has moss growing on it.

“Elsecar is such a lovely village and I think it’s a shame that one of the first things you see as you enter the village is the overgrown sign,” said Carole, 52, of Shire Oaks Drive.

“I would like to have the sign cleaned so that it looks neater and that Elsecar looks like a welcoming place to visit.”

Carole is hoping to raise £220 to have the sign professionally cleaned.

“When you are driving past, you can barely make out what the sign says because of the dirt on it. I hope that the local community will help to make the area look lovely again.”
