BARNSLEY Hospital has become the first hospital in Yorkshire to buy a 3D camera system which will make keyhole surgery easier.
The EinsteinVision 3D camera will make keyhole surgery (laparoscopy) quicker and easier for patients and surgeons. The camera shows both 2D and 3D images and it also has a system which eliminates moisture and ‘fogging’ from the tip of the endoscope.
The combined features of 3D images with heated endoscopes enables faster surgery, resulting in reduced anaesthesia for patients. More complex procedures can be performed by keyhole approach reducing the need for much more invasive, open surgical techniques. This ensures minimal hospital stay for patients, reduced post-operative pain, faster recovery, and quicker return to work.
Simon Rowe, theatre, recovery and day surgery unit manager, said: “The camera system is cutting edge technology and means we are the only hospital in Yorkshire to offer 3D laparoscopy surgery. The new system gives us potential for greater efficiencies and increased productivity in the operating theatre.
“The camera is user friendly meaning a reduced learning curve for surgeons and junior surgeons in training. Surgeons also report that they experience less fatigue when performing complex surgery using the EinsteinVision 3D camera, because they are viewing images in 3D and can see all the internal structures more clearly.”
