POLICE are appealing for information after a man was caught trying to steal a car by its owner.

At 5.30am on July 25, it is reported that a man entered a house via an unlocked door on Lancaster Street, taking car keys and an amount of cash.

The owner, a 34-year-old man, was asleep at his home and as woken by the sound of his car being started.

The man went downstairs to confront a man who was trying to take his car.

The offender then ran away on foot, leaving with the cash but the car was not stolen.

Police have released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to in connection the incident and believe could assist with enquiries.
