DOG owners are being encouraged to keep their pets on a lead after a swan was attacked in Worsbrough at the weekend.
The male swan is currently being looked after by the Yorkshire Swan and Wildlife Rescue Hospital.
A spokesperson said: “We were forced to rescue the male swan from Worsbrough over the weekend, after an uncontrolled dog was witnessed injuring the bird.
“He has a number of puncture wounds to his right thigh, and is receiving continued veterinary treatment here in our care.
“We hope to get the swan home to his awaiting mate and cygnets as soon as practically possible.
“A polite reminder – as dog lovers ourselves – to ensure pets are appropriately controlled around wildlife.”
