PLANS to refurbish Barnsley’s historic YMCA venue have taken a step forward after the council put the project out to tender.
The local authority is seeking a contractor to complete the works inside the Blucher Street building, which include a refurbished sports hall, kitchen, officers, toilets and workspaces.
The outside of the building will also be redeveloped and a multi-use outdoor area will be created after plans to use a portion of £10m funding secured from the government.
Andrea Battye, youth work manager at YMCA Barnsley, said: “We are immensely grateful to have received this funding – the planned redevelopment will help to modernise our facilities as well as future proofing the building making it more environmentally friendly and sustainable.”
Work is set to start in July.
