PARENTS across Barnsley are finding out today which primary school their children will be starting at in September.

It’s National Offer Day and Barnsley Council has announced that 2,452 children (94 per cent) have been offered their first choice of primary school.

A council spokesperson said: “We’re delighted to offer 2,575 children (98 per cent) a place at one of their preferred primary schools this year, helping more children to flourish at the start of their education journey.”

The number of children receiving an offer from one of their preferred schools is:

106 children (4.1 per cent) getting their second choice.

17 children (0.6 per cent) getting their third choice.

The council says it is committed to making sure no children are left without a school offer.

41 children (1.6 per cent) didn’t get any of their preferred choices but have been allocated a place at an alternative school with the help of the admissions team.

98 per cent of parents applied online, these children will be able to view their offer on the online portal today and will have received an email with their offer letter.

Carly Speechley, Executive Director for Children’s Services, said: “We want Barnsley to be the place of possibilities, where every child and young person can aim high, excel in their education and achieve their full potential.

“That’s why it’s great news that we’ve been able to offer 98 per cent of children a place at one of their preferred primary schools, including 94 per cent getting their first choice.

“This could not be possible without all of the great work of our admissions team, making sure no child is left without a school place for September. I would like to thank them for making this process simple for families and helping give children the best possible start.

“We understand that some children and families may have received disappointing news today and we’re here to help you with the next steps.”

The council admissions team is happy to support any parents or carers who may wish to appeal their offer with appropriate advice and guidance about the process. You can speak to the team today by calling 01226 773677 or emailing admissions@barnsley.gov.uk.
