MEMBERS of Barnsley Youth Choir will be singing a recently unearthed Barnsley carol to the nation tomorrow.

‘Christmas Eve’ by local composer Arthur Godfrey was written back in 1933 and published in the Barnsley Chronicle.

It was recently found in the Barnsley Chronicle’s archives and Barnsley Museums decided to record it using the original words and music.

The youth choir has been invited to take part in a live broadcast tomorrow (Christmas Eve) on BBC Radio 4 at 9am,

Around 30 of the 130-strong Senior Choir came together to learn this piece for the first time this morning, having never sung it before.

A youth choir spokesperson said: "We are thrilled to be involved in a live broadcast tomorrow on BBC Radio 4 at 9am of this Christmas carol that has been unearthed by Barnsley Museums in their archives written by local composer Arthur Godfrey.

"Please tune in tomorrow at 9am on Radio 4 to listen to the finished version!"

It was said about the carol at the time: “We hope that this carol will be sung and played throughout Barnsley and district this Christmastide, and that it will be appreciated that it is the work of a Barnsley composer.”
