BARNSLEY residents are being urged to not leave it until the last minute to order and collect prescriptions ahead of the Christmas break.

Most GP practices will be closed for an additional two days and some pharmacies will be running reduced opening times over the holiday period.

Residents are also reminded to use NHS 111 when their GP practice is closed.

Dr David Crichton, medical director of NHS South Yorkshire, said: “We want to ensure that anyone with long-term health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease, enjoys the festive break and doesn’t run out of their essential medicines.

“It only takes a few minutes to collect prescriptions or over-the-counter remedies so if you take regular medications or need to stock up your medicine cabinet please plan ahead so you can enjoy your break.

“Christmas and the new year can be a very busy time for the local NHS, so picking up a repeat prescription in advance, and knowing which services are available, could help to keep staff free to deal with life-threatening emergencies.”
