A DODWORTH couple who celebrate their platinum wedding anniversary on Tuesday have revealed their secret to a long and happy marriage.

Mary and Bryan Woodhead, 90 and 92, believe it’s all down to ‘hard work and good food’.

Mary and Bryan began ‘courting’ when Mary was 15 and continued until they were married at Dodworth Church on December 19, 1953.

Bryan was a miner his entire working life, whilst Mary worked at the shirt factory when she left school – before caring for their four children.

Mary told the Chronicle: “Bryan’s sister used to live across from me so I used to go and travel to him with her, that’s how we met.

“I was 15 when we met and we were courting for six years before we got married.”

Asked about the secret to a long and happy marriage, Mary added: “I’d say it’s about hard work and good food.

“We always believed that in marriage you’ve got to stay together, and that’s what we’ve done.”

The pair also have seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Their daughter Carol Davies joked: “It’s costing them a fortune this Christmas.”
