A NEW community room has opened in Darton in a bid to help socially isolated residents.

Berneslai Homes’ tenants at its Fountain Close complex put the idea forward and even refurbished the empty space, which was once a guest bedroom at the facility.

The first coffee morning held raised £155 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Coun Steve Hunt, who opened the space, said: “It will give residents a space where they can meet together for coffee mornings and bingo.

“I am delighted to see this project come to fruition – it was a fantastic idea to bring the room back into use.

“This is an important community space particularly for those who are elderly and can feel isolated.

“My thanks to the officers at Berneslai Homes who gave permission for this project to go ahead and provided furniture.”
