A GROUP of 23 railway enthusiasts – led by a former Barnsley man – will travel to the town later this year to learn more about the local industry.
Tony Hulson, originally from Barnsley but now living in Bournemouth, will bring the strong contingent up north in October.
Well-known Barnsley man Dave Cherry will host a talk on the railways in the town when they arrive on October 2.
He said: “Tony is a manager on the railways down there and he has organised the trip to study the Barnsley Railway History.
“It seems they are fascinated by our past.
“They are especially keen to see the old Sheffield Victoria to Manchester London Road track that goes through Penistone that is now the Trans Pennine Trail.
“They will also walk through the Thurgoland tunnel.
“They have asked me to give them a talk and film show on the railways in the Penistone British Legion Club.”
