CONGRATULATIONS to a Cudworth couple who celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary yesterday.

Valerie and Herbert Youel, 82 and 83 respectively, have been happily married for 60 years after meeting at a mutual friend’s house party and forming a ‘gradual but lovely’ connection.

When asked about the secret to a long and happy marriage, Valerie said: “We just love each other very dearly.

“But if you asked my husband, he’d tell you ‘I worked night shifts and Valerie worked days’ – I was a shop assistant and Herbert was a welder.”

The couple have two sons, Michael and Nicholas, and five grandchildren.

They will celebrate their anniversary at Boatman’s Rest tonight with a barbecue with close friends and family.

Valerie added: “You realise as you get older just how precious life is.

“You have to soak up every single part, you have to make the most of it.”
