A PAIR of ‘crazy’ Barnsley fans will travel nearly 1,000 miles to Wembley on Monday – after they booked a holiday to Barcelona before the season concluded.
Matt Wood, 47, and his eight-year-old son Hartley, may well be travelling further than anyone else as the Reds face Sheffield Wednesday in the League One play-off final next week.
When Michael Duff’s side started the season poorly, Matt, from Wombwell, decided to book a trip to Barcelona with his family – but as the season went on, he always knew there was a chance he’d have to cut it short.
And that’s exactly what he and his son are doing – after flying out to Spain yesterday, they’ll fly back 932 miles to London Gatwick to watch Barnsley at Wembley, only to return back to Barcelona the very next day.
His wife, Karen Wood, told the Chronicle: “Last year when the play-offs did not even seem possible, we booked our family holiday to Barcelona for the May school holidays.
“Fast forward to a super season and suddenly there was a dilemma with it looking more and more likely the play-offs were on the cards.
“We were unable to cancel the holiday due to having tickets to watch Barcelona play and attending the Spanish Grand Prix the following weekend.
“They have booked flights to fly into London Gatwick on Monday morning, then they’ll watch the play-off final, stay at a hotel by Gatwick – only to fly back out and join us back on the family holiday Tuesday morning.
“I think it’s crazy and they’re bonkers but you don’t get to see your team play at Wembley very often.”
