A FATHER and son left Oakwell on Wednesday to head to Burton Albion Football Club in a bid to raise funds for Weston Park Cancer Charity.
Carl Mellor, 41, from Goldthorpe, typically walks from ground to ground to raise money for the charity, racking up thousands over the years.
Carl and his dad, John, 63, left Oakwell and headed 25 miles to Chesterfield, through to Derby County and finishing on day three in Burton Albion, making it a 70-mile trip.
In 2018, Carl’s step-dad, Steven, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer caused by the HPV virus in his throat and neck.
He began radio and chemotherapy imminently at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield – where he remained an inpatient for many months.
Steven rung the bell at Weston Park just two days before Christmas the same year.
“Throughout his treatment, the hospital provided Steven with advice, therapy treatments and endless emotional support,” Carl said.
“They really are amazing and I enjoy fundraising for them.”
