A BARNSLEY woman who helped raise £10,000 for Barnsley Hospital’s children’s ward by swimming the English Channel in 1997 in a six-person relay has recently completed a 21-mile swim to raise more funds.
Julie Kimberley, 58, from Gawber, swam the equivalent distance of the English Channel to raise money for a beauty therapy service for people living with cancer – Well Wellbeing – and the hospital’s Make a Memory Appeal.
She completed the challenge at Bannatyne’s in Dodworth last week, swimming 1,690 lengths of the pool, over a four-day period.
Julie works at The Well as a beauty therapist specialising in cancer care.
“Twenty-six years later, I decided to attempt the distance again, but in a swimming pool rather than in the sea,” she told the Chronicle.
“I chose these causes because they are both very close to my heart and I knew they would keep me focused as I tackled the swim.
“I would like to say a huge thank you to the staff at the hospital, my friends and family and the wider community who have come together to support me.”
