A TREE which was mistakenly cut down in Hoyland has been replaced – much to the delight of a local councillor.

As part of ongoing works to transform and improve Hoyland town centre, contractors mistakenly cut down a tree which was supposed to stay.

This angered local residents who were ‘baffled’ at what they saw.

But another tree has been added to the site to complement the new-look town centre.

Coun Tim Shepherd, who represents the area, said: “The tree being taken down was a misunderstanding.

“We promised to replace it as soon as possible and that’s exactly what we’ve done."

A celebration event to mark the transformation of the square takes place on Saturday (March 4) from 9.30am-2pm and will include live music, face painting, balloon modelling and more.
