A MAN described as the ‘epitome’ of community spirit has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award.

Nigel Patrick, 58, of Cudworth, raised the spirits of his neighbours during the pandemic with his lockdown garden discos – but he hasn’t stopped there.

He’s since held large events in his area for both VE Day and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, all to put a smile on the faces of his friends.

“It all started as just a hobby,” Nigel said.

“I found some bits of DJ tackle and during lockdown I was just a bit fed up.

“I took a panel of my fence out and then in lockdown everyone went into their gardens and looked to enjoy themselves.

“I decided to do a VE Day celebration too and everyone went and stood outside – we had a couple of games of bingo and that went really well.

“Everyone has been asking about this year and for the Queen’s Jubilee we did the same thing and we even had a bouncy castle.”

Nigel says he couldn’t have done everything without the help of his neighbours.

Having been nominated in the Community Hero category, Nigel says he’s overwhelmed to be nominated.

“I’m a bit shocked to be honest, I just can’t believe it,” he said.

“I didn’t do it all myself so I can’t take all the credit.\

“I just did it to so people could enjoy themselves and put a smile on my face – and it definitely put a smile on my face.”
