A YOUNG ice skater from Barnsley has been selected for Team GB and will travel to the Netherlands later this month for her first international competition.

Isla Shenton, 12, from Pogmoor, has been ice skating since she was just five years old and has gone from strength-to-strength.

When she started ice skating she had two main goals – competing at the British Figure Skating Championships and competing abroad.

Last year she wowed judges as she finished third in the under-13 category at the British Figure Skating Championships – and on February 25 she’ll compete at the Challenge Cup in the Netherlands.

Her mum, 38-year-old Donna Shenton, told the Chronicle: “She’s been chosen for the British ice skating squad and this is the first time that’s happened – probably because of her age.

“I’m going out to the Netherlands with her too – she’s so excited to get out there.

“When she started out she had two things that she really wanted to do – compete in the British Figure Skating Championship and compete abroad.

“She’ll have done that and I’m really proud.”
