A SYRIAN refugee puppet arrived in Barnsley last weekend on the latest leg of her ‘incredible journey’.
The 3.5-metre-high puppet, named Little Amal, is part of ‘The Walk’ project which has seen her travel from the Syrian border across Europe and landing in the UK.
On Saturday, the puppet was welcomed to Wentworth Castle Gardens and was met by Barnsley’s ESOL (English as a Second Language) group.
There are more than 100 members in the group which embeds language skills with cultural activities.
As part of the project, a temporary art installation will also be seen at the castle folly until November 20.
Coun Tim Cheetham, cabinet spokesperson for place, said: “It’s a real honour that Barnsley has been chosen to be part of this monumental project.
“Barnsley opens its arms to everyone and we are proud of our safe, welcoming, and inclusive borough.
“Our communities are at the heart of everything we do and it is vital for us to support our residents and offer opportunities to learn, grow and create friendships.
“We hope that the arrival of Little Amal will raise awareness and continue to spark important conversations.”
Ruth Carrington, partnerships and participation manager for the National Trust at Wentworth Castle Gardens, added: “The National Trust is dedicated to finding ways of making the arts, culture, and heritage a vehicle for bringing people together for shared acknowledgement, respect and understanding.
“We are delighted to welcome Little Amal to Wentworth Castle Gardens, as part of our vision to create a welcoming environment for everyone at this special site.”
