HOMEOWNERS are being reminded to double-check before locking up their garden sheds – as they become a prime spot for cats over the winter.

As temperatures get cooler, cats may try to seek refuge in sheds and garages in a bid to escape the elements.

However, many feline friends soon find themselves stuck when the doors to the buildings are locked by the owners.

Cats protection Barnsley is now urging homeowners to check before locking up, to make sure that any hiding cats can get home safely.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “Lots of cats are missing. Please check your garage and shed just in case you have an unexpected visitor who needs to get home.”
