THE WINNERS of an annual competition designed to get residents out-and-about have been announced.

Beat the Street launched on June 10 and ran until Thursday.

The activity, which usually runs throughout the summer holidays requires players to gain points by checking in at sensor points, called Beat Boxes, across the town. The more Beat Boxes you visit within an hour, the more points you gain.

Throughout this year's competition, more than 22,000 people took part and walked, cycled, or ran more than 161,000 miles.

Coun Jim Andrews, cabinet spokesperson for public health, said: “It has been an amazing Beat the Street for Barnsley and we’d like to thank everyone who took part.

“We have seen such passion and commitment from players who have got in touch to tell us their stories about how they have loved the game and will be sorry to see the Beat Boxes go. We’ve heard from people who have got fitter, spent more quality time together as a family out and about and really got to know the local area on foot in a way that you just don’t when you’re driving. We’ve heard lovely anecdotes about people who visited every Beat Box, stories about lovely conversations being struck up and people trying out new activities.”

With the competition now closed, it's time to reveal the winners of this year's competition...
