MORE than 50 people were in Barnsley Hospital with Covid for the first time since March this week.

There were 51 residents in the hospital on July 19, the most since March 4 - and 40 more than the start of the month.

A total of 85 patients have been admitted to Barnsley Hospital with Covid in the last 23 days.

Julia Burrows, the town’s director of public health, said: “Although we are seeing a lower number of people needing hospital care compared to previous Covid-19 peaks, admissions into hospital continue to rise.

“The healthcare system is experiencing increased pressure from having lots of people occupying hospital beds including intensive care and lots of people attending A and E, while large numbers of staff have to isolate.”
