POLICE and emergency services are currently dealing with a suspected unexploded mortar shell in Fleets Dam.

The shell was discovered today (February 25) at around 4pm, and police have since closed Smithies Lane while the shell is dealt with.

A mortar shell is a type of ammunition that is designed to be shot over a long distance.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “The Army’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit are on the way to assess the shell.

“Our officers will remain at the address until enquiries have concluded.

“Please avoid the area.”
