TAXI drivers from across the borough who have experienced a loss of income as a result of the coronavirus pandemic could receive a one-off payment.

Licenced taxi drivers could be entitled to £500 thanks to a new council initiative.

The payment will be made from a £30m figure provided to Sheffield City Region to support businesses across the region.

Leader of Barnsley Council, Coun Sir Steve Houghton said: “This is a difficult time for businesses and individuals who, due to no fault of their own are losing trade in their business and are suffering financially as a result.

“Support has already been launched for businesses across the borough affected by the recent Covid 19 restrictions but one area yet to receive any direct support is our licensed taxi drivers who play a vital part in the economy but have been clearly affected.

“Barnsley has approximately 600 licensed taxi drivers, and as part of our discussions at regional level, we have tried to provide the best package of support to people with the discretionary funds.”
