BARNSLEY'S Christmas lights switch-on has been cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The event, which usually takes place outside of the town hall will no go ahead after the government's 'rule of six' would make it illegal for crowds to gather.

The new rules introduced on Tuesday say that no more than six people should meet at any one time.

Despite the cancellation, an alternative is being planned by the council which will be revealed soon.

Coun Tim Cheetham, cabinet spokesman for place, said: “Because of the current restrictions in place due to the pandemic, Barnsley’s Christmas lights switch-on won’t take place in its usual format this year.

“However, Christmas is by no means cancelled and we’re working on an exciting alternative that we’ll reveal more about in the coming weeks.”
