RESIDENTS at a Darfield care home celebrated the opening of its renovated garden with an unexpected Zoom call from the Mayor of Barnsley.

Thornhill House, on Church Street, unveiled its renovated garden which was fitted with garden ornaments and plants that were donated by local residents.

Unaware that Coun Pauline Markham, Mayor of Barnsley, was going to call them on Zoom to officially open the new garden.

Christian Whiteley-Mason, the care home’s manager, was thrilled that Coun Markham took the time to call residents.

He told We Are Barnsley: “It was absolutely brilliant. The Mayor was sat in the Mayor’s Parlour and made a real effort with us.

“She said she would’ve loved to be there in person but couldn’t because of social distancing restrictions.

“The residents were really excited and Coun Pauline went around each resident and had a chat with them.

“She even asked three of us to ‘cut the ribbon’ and officially open our new garden. It made the day feel really special.”
