Barnsley Man Interviewed After Machine Accident

Thursday July 28 2011

A Barnsley factory worker says he is lucky to be alive after being dragged through a 5in gap in machinery that left him with serious injuries.

Matthew Lowe appeared on ITV news in April after suffering a broken back, shattered pelvis, broken hips and several rib fractures when he was dragged through some machinery at a Barnsley company.

** UPDATED: Two firms have been fined a total of £75,000 and ordered to pay £40,000 court costs due to this incident. He was employed at Compass Engineering on Whaley Road, Barugh Green, when the accident occurred in December 2008. The machinery was fitted by Bedford-based Kaltenbach Ltd.

Both firms had admitted breaching health and safety rules and were sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court yesterday.
Compass was fined £45,000 and told to pay £24,000 costs; Kaltenbach was fined £30,000 with £16,000 costs.***

I could not believe that this man was alive when I saw the story and x-rays in the paper. He is so very lucky. Good luck to him and his family for the future.

I know, it's the most amazing story I have heard in a long time. So glad he's doing so well and that he has such an obviously supportive family.
