Around 30 firefighters are tackling a large fire at the former Brampton fire station on Knollbeck Lane - and the road has been closed.
Crews were called to the building, which is no longer owned by SYFR, at around 2.45pm. Fire engines from Dearne, Barnsley, Elm Lane, Edlington and Rotherham fire stations are at the scene. An aerial ladder platform has also been mobilised to help tackle the blaze.
Nearby residents have been advised to stay indoors and keep doors and windows shut, due to the large amount of smoke coming from the building.
Some residents living on Knollbeck Crescent have also been evacuated.
Brampton Bierlow fire station closed in June 2010 and was sold to developers in May this year.
