Barnsley Town Centre Plan for 1500 Jobs

Tuesday March 15 2011

Council leader Steve Houghton called on the community of Barnsley to lobby the government to help get the town centre's regeneration plans off the ground. He made the plea during a press conference about the town's swathing budget cuts.

Don't forget Steve Houghton is doing a LIVECHAT on We Are Barnsley today (March 15) at 2pm.

You've had over 13 years and hundreds of millions to regenerate Barnsley, its economy and the town centre, paid millions to architects and various consultants so far and its still a mess. Stop blaming everyone else and do the job we've paid for.

This Regeneration has been talked about, planned, cancelled, reputforward, replanned, cancelled since I was a teen, I'm 30 there must have been more than a couple of million pounds spent now and what do we have to show for it? a video saying you are optimistic that the banks will invest, who will buy into this scheme once it's done? one walk round the town centre on a weekday will be enough to put anyone off. I would say it's laughable but it's my council tax that's being squandered yet again. our council is one black hole and it's time most of them were shown the door.

1500 jobs for retail & supporting trades in Barnsley town centre - No way. As usual inflated figures to try & get funding. The banks will laugh hysterically. The previous two posts are right, so many schemes and so much money has come and gone and now the opportunity has passed for the next 10 years at least. I would suggest that if its such a strong idea that the council uses its reserves to pay for it, then there is no need to pay banks interest and the council makes all the profits when the scheme succeeds - but of course it won't succeed so please do not spend my money on it.

Didn't we also invest substantially into the £200million+ cost of Supertram (very useful way of getting into Sheffield to shop) which was then given to the current operator on a 25 year lease for the total cost of £1 (ONE POUND). None of the profits come back to us and at the end of the 25yrs the trams will need replacing, will we be contributing again....?
