This view taken around 1989 shows is interesting as it show the the bus and rail stations in their former (if not original) guises. The bus station is in its "fishbone" traffic arrangement, with passengers having little protection from the elements, save for a roof! It should be remembered that the old Stand 1 (next to the railway viaduct ) offered even less shelter was used for the flagship "White Rose Express" services - not a great advert for the town!
The railway station was to be rebuilt during 1990-91 and became the "Interchange". Platform 1 ( for Sheffield services) then had a tiny brick-built waiting room with no door and a single-element electric heater as warmth!!

Sorry but I would query the date thus photo was taken.
We left Yorkshire in 1986, and the bus/train station didn't look anything like this.
The bus station had 4 sections to it with access to the central island in both sides for buses. As I remember it was also parallel parking, not nose in like this photo.
But I do remember the railway crossing and bridge.

Sorry lyn, but its you whos mostaken I went to college in barnsley from 90-92 and worked in town til 96 and the bua station was pretty much like this. You thought your bus had arrived then once it had let its passengers off it would reverse away to the far wall and the driver disappeared into the little brick building watching driver come out hoping they were going to your bus was a pain especially in the middle of winter

We have been in Australia since 1969 has any one got photos of the Bus Station in the 1950-1960 era. It was different then also.

Gudday Norma! (bit of stereotyping there!) I have lots of views of Yorkshire Traction buses in the 1950 and '60s - mainly in the bus station - they virtually all have copyright on 'em so i can't put 'em on the this site but I'll be happy to send e-mail you some direct every so often if you wish. I think if you took a trip around the town now you'd be shocked how many things had been closed & demolished!

lyn I think you are remembering the previous bus station, which i guess went around the turn of 60s/70s, i remember this one from mid 70's to end of mid 90's ish,
then the new interchange, after we had the 3 bus station set up for a few years of building

KP your spot on.The bus station with the island in the middle was the previous one to this. This was built mid seventies just after the council offices was finished which are now going to be pulled down. The old one with the central island was dangerous as you had to cross between parked buses and there was a fatality where someone was killed.
