WW2 Shell found in Barnsley Canal

POLICE have cordoned off Old Mill Lane and Wakefield Road following the discovery of a World War II shell.

Police were called to the scene at 9:45am following a report of the sighting in the canal next to ASDA.

The police search team have removed the shell from the canal. Photographs have been taken and sent to the Explosive ordnance disposal unit (bomb squad).

The will examine the image and decide if they need to be dispatched to secure the shell.

The roads are expected to remain closed in both directions for some time.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.
