New exhibition shows Barnsley's history

Thursday February 22 2018

NEVER before seen footage of Barnsley over the last 100 years will be shown for the first time at a special exhibition at Experience Barnsley.

Barnsley on Film is the culmination of a two year project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund to make the sound and film collections held by Barnsley Archives and Local Studies available for the first time.

The films show events such as a bustling Barnsley Market in 1937, a young Queen Elizabeth II making her first visit to the town in 1955 and Mayors' Parades through the years.

Other features at the exhibition include a retro telephone, which will whisk people back to the past as they hear Barnsley people talking about their lives over the decades.

There will also be a number of free film showings taking place alongside the exhibition including the 1930s film 'Black Diamonds' on Saturday March 10 and Barnsley: A Portrait of its People on Thursday March 15.

The exhibition is open from Saturday March 10 to Wednesday April 11.
