Elsecar gets special heritage status

Tuesday March 21 2017

ELSECAR is celebrating after becoming one of only ten places in the country to be named as a  ‘Heritage Action Zone’ by Historic England.

It means that Elsecar will receive resources and funding set to help its visitor and tourism economy.

Historic England says it will work with Barnsley Council and Elsecar Heritage Centre to improve understanding of the village’s heritage, bring historic buildings back into use and encourage local people and community groups to get involved in the village’s development.

The Heritage Action Zones initiative has been launched by Historic England to support places that are rich in heritage and have the potential to become focal points for sustainable economic development and community life.

The other areas named as Heritage Action Zones are in Appleby, Coventry, Hull Old Town, King's Lynn, Nottingham, Ramsgate, Sunderland, Sutton and Weston-super-Mare.

Please is it possible for the Railway Centre to rescue the Mail Bag Post from the old line opposite Tesco. I remember this in action as a child when the Mail trains thundered through. It seems a shame to let it rot into the ground
