NINETY-FIVE per cent of Year 6 pupils have been awarded a place at their secondary school of choice this year.

Of the 2,487 children who applied for a place at secondary school, 2,368 got a place at their first choice.

The council says that 80 children (3.33 per cent) were offered their second choice of school and 10 (0.4 per cent) got their third choice.

Some 29 children (1.16 per cent) did not get any of their choices but have been allocated a school place by Barnsley Council’s School Admissions team.

There were 65 late applications which will be processed this month.

National figures have seen a fall in the proportion of 11-year-olds securing a place at their first-choice secondary school.
