Do You Think The Internet Needs To Be Safer?

A BARNSLEY MP is backing a campaign to get increased internet safety for children.

John Healey says statics show that 87 per cent of children use the internet at home and almost half have access in their bedroom. But almost a third of children have spoken to someone online that they have not met in real life and a number of these have gone on to meet in person.

The police is also stepping up an internet safety campaign. Superintendent Eddie Murphy said: “Exploring the internet can be fantastic, opening a world of possibilities for children, expanding their horizons and exposing them to different cultures and ways of life. However, it can also expose them to danger. There are people who try to sexually exploit children through the use of on-line services and the internet. They can attract children gradually through the use of attention, affection, kindness, and even gifts.”

Do you have concerns about your children using the internet? What do you do to make it safer for them?

The responsibility is entirely with the parents. Educating of the risks is the way; not censorship. Services such as Google offer 'safe search' by default—which is great–however, again, the responsibility is with the parents. This is true for videogames, movies and other such adult material.
