What punishment should be given to those who use their phone while driving?

Monday January 23 2017

DRIVERS caught using their mobile phone could be given six points and a £200 fine from March - doubling the current punishment.

New proposals by the Government also say that driver education courses will not be an option.

The current penalty is three penalty points and a fine of £100.

What do you think? What punishment should be given to those who use their phone while driving? Leave your comments below.

A ban! There's no need to touch your phone when driving.

I dont think thats enough, £1000.00 + fine, ban for 3 years and the phone, tablet or laptop confiscated.
If they hit a car/truck and defo a person either maiming or killing JAIL TIME! Our laws are way to soft in comparison to other countries.

Points and fine is already what they give you so what else could they do realistically apart from bans

What about using your phone as GPS?

I drive 600 miles a week around Barnsley and the amount of near hits caused by.folk on phones is unreal. I don't see what the issue is, when the phone rings you pull over and answer it then. There's no excuse for driving with the phone stuck to your ear, hands free kits are cheap enough. As for the punishment, confiscate the phone and make them go through an expensive procedure to get it back, like they do when they take cars for no insurance. People are so wedded to their phones it would do them good to be without it.

3 month driving ban.No point large fine, how many pay or offer £10-00 per month.
When unable to use car can join rest of dumbos on bus telling everybody the important things,eg. What they had for breakfast, how much they had to drink last night.

All ppl caught using mobile behind the wheel should get a 6 months ban automatically and should be made to surrender their licence the same day thay are caught !!!!! they never think they'll injure someone and think they'll not get caught also if the public catch em on car came they should be able to claim a 50 pounds reward which the driver will have to pay when sentenced in court

Ok then so you take the car off them .then they loose there job so that puts them in our pockets on benefits ??? yes bigger fines .take phone away NO because they just get a new one .Our courts have been too soft too long and I am no just talking about car drivers

Masie. I cannot believe your comment? Tell it to the many many people that have been injured because someone was chatting on their phone. Or better still tell it to someone who has been bereaved by some thoughtless irresponsible person using their phone while driving. There is no excuse, put a msg on voice mail to say you are driving and will respond as soon as you have stopped somewhere safe. Even hands free is not an option, NEVER stop being aware of what is going on around you when driving.

I agree with Maisie. Sometimes you get a call that's too important to ignore.

If I'm driving I prefer to send a text but if some people want to answer the call why shouldn't they?

So are you saying we can pick and choose which laws we comply with and ignore the ones we disagree with ?

And if a member of your family was killed by an imbecile whom was using his phone whilst driving ????. YOU ARE A FOOL SIR

They should get an instant ban and there car seized. No phone call is that important and if you think it is your not intelligent enough to have a licence

Drivers talk to passengers in their car so why shouldn't they talk to other people on the phone? Stuff the PC brigade, I'll talk to who I like when I'm driving!

Reply Posted by @Eric B on Wednesday January 25 2017 at 15:55
You can talk to and listen to whoever you like while you are driving - your passengers, your radio and people on speaker phone.
I think the point of 'hands free' devices is to make sure drivers have..well, hands free to drive safely.
Doing a quick text means your hands are busy, and in the split second it might take to drop your mobile, somebody could be seriously injured or killed.
Surely you know that?
What's it got to do with stuffing the PC Brigade....

Mobile car crushers, crush the car on the spot irrespective of who the owners are. You would only have to do a couple of dozen and the word would spread like wildfire over social media; problem solved.

Wow, that's a strong declaration, 'FEDUPOF ALL THE PUSSYFOOTING AROUND'....I like the idea for a fleeting moment but it's a dystopian fantasy and we can't be having that.
The system has got enough on trying to implement the laws we've got.

The Bishop, texting while driving is just as dangerous and just as illegal. Plenty of folk have been killed or injured by drivers ' just sending a quick text. ' put it on handsfree and if you have to take a call or a send a text pull up, then do it.

I see many while walking my dog, mostly young women and I shout to them to stop it,the penalty will have to rise a lot to stop this practice. I think an automatic one year ban and a £500 fine should be put in place to try and stop it but even then I don't think it will as there are not Anough police to catch them

A severe punishment would be to be stuck in a room for a week with the person on WAB who posts repetitive comments on every thread using different pseudonyms but who never actually contributes anything.
