WH Smith to close today

Tuesday January 17 2017

IT'S the end of an era today as one of the town's oldest retailers - WH Smith - closes for the final time.

The retailer is among a dozen businesses on Cheapside and May Day Green leaving the Metropolitan Centre this month so the council can press ahead with refurbishment of the building as part of the Better Barnsley project.

It has been in Barnsley since before the First Wold War - establishing itself as bookseller WH Smith and Son on Market Hill in 1906.

It remained there until 1973 when the business moved to the newly built Metropolitan Centre, where it has stayed.

BMBC should hang there heads in shame!! Its disgraceful, WH Smiths have traded in Barnsley for 111 yrs! To just cast them aside is very wrong. Somewhere should have been provided for them to relocate to. BMBC do NOT listen to the good folks of this once great town. I hope people will see sence come may and get rid ASAP. But the sheep will vote as per , my granny and my mam and dad!!! Come on give someone else a chance. Even the monster loony raving party can't do any worse!!

What I sense has happened here is that the council issues a notice a long time ago to WH Smith and nothing was send back until it was too late and most stored for the move had responded first.

What about moving into one of the old banks, might needs renovating but surely the room in the old Yorkshire Bank (I think) on the corner opposite the Halifax bank will have been big enough for a temporary one?

I know someone who works here or did in town. And the first she knew of it closing as there was nowhere else was early December; they didn’t even know they would have to move. Which to me says its lack of activity of the shop not the councils fault?

There may be some truth in that Mr. C.
WH Smith have closed quite a few branches down recently, maybe they saw the opportunity to close their Barnsley branch too, on the quiet.
Having said that, it is a shame that a business that`s been a centerpiece and traded in town for over a hundred years is closing.
I`m all for changing our town centre, it certainly needs it, but I do fear for the caliber of shops that will fill the units. We`re over-run with Pound stores and charity shops as it is, for me it`s going to take something very special to entice big high street names back to Barnsley. We can but hope !!

It is disgraceful that the book ordering, book reading, book loving, stationery buying bibliophiles of Barnsley have had their much loved WH smiths closed without any warning. What will people do now?

How dare you call the people of this once fine town a load of bibliophiles. I am disgusted and appalled.

Pretty sure it'll come back eventually. A temporary loss for a great gain at the end of it all.

I agree John, WH Smiths will be back in some guise or other in the near future, though are currently very busy expanding their shops at hospitals all over the uk selling snacks, drinks, gifts etc at vastly inflated prices to visitors and patients. And paperback books and stationery too - this is WH smiths after all.

John why would it come back to a town that caused it to shut up in first place, I think most retailers would avoid Barnsley like the plague, Barnsley council are deluded buffoons and the top brass are nincompoops

Well it's a disgrace. First we lost BHS and now it's WHS. Before too long there will be no shops left in Barnsley with names that are just 3 letters.

Sir Phillip Green - how dare you!
There will be an M n' S in Barnsley as long as people are prepared to pay for posh sandwiches.
And WH Smiths better keep their hands off all the hospital outlets as M n' S are the only ones who should be ripping off sick people, visitors and nurses by overpricing their goods on site.

WH Smiths shops are closing all over the country, it is certainly not just in Barnsley.
The nearest branch to me in Enfield which has a Tory Council closed last October. it was near to a busy train station, a thriving Sixth Form College and not far from Middlesex Uni.
Perhaps WH Smiths are having a re think and a re brand.

What do you mean who could agree to shop there?

It was just a standard shop, selling good for an average price.
