Are there job opportunities in Barnsley? Join our debate!

Tuesday July 5 2011

Channel 4's The Fairy Jobmother wants to come to Barnsley to help unemployed people find jobs after an appeal from one WABer.
On Friday, someone posted this message on Hayley Taylor's website: "There is a website called We Are Barnsley. There are always lot of posts on their Facebook page of people wanting jobs. I myself have a job but there are lots of people here who don’t have a job and are desperate to get one. Think Barnsley could do with your help."
To which the Fairy Jobmother replied and said: "I don’t think it’s just Barnsley that has the problem with a lack of opportunity, I think it’s hard everywhere at the moment. I would love to come and see the unemployed in Barnsley as thats the place I first started working with the unemployed so it holds a special place in my heart, it’s the place where I had my thunderbolt moment when I was 24…….seems a long long time ago."
What do you think? Could the Fairy Jobmother help us? Or are the opportunities just not there?

Obviously there are jobs in Barnsley and most people want to work. We'll always need more jobs but the question is; will they pay a living wage or the bare minimum? No one wants to work 40 hours a week then have to go begging to the government for working tax credits etc. to be able to manage.
The Fairy Jobmother needs to ask our politicians and employers why they can't pay workers a living wage for 40 hours graft. I bet they don't work for the minimum!
Fairness, equality of opportunity, social justice and a living income. Is that too much to ask?

There are loads of jobs going in Barnsley, but unfortunately there are too many people going after them who don't live in Barnsley. I have just graduated university and I am more than qualified to get a decent job but I don't want to travel far as I don't have a car so I am currently on work experience at the Digital Media Centre. Its good but I'm still working for free so I believe some businesses in Barnsley need the kick up the arse to employ a graduate so they can give them experience rather than making them work for free and the unemployed need to try that little bit harder instead of just going straight to the job centre to sign on.
I have my CV on loads of employment websites and I apply for jobs every day and I get replies so come on people where's your motiviation?
