Should motorists who cause death by dangerous driving face longer sentences?

Monday December 5 2016

DRIVERS who cause death by dangerous or careless driving could get life in prison under new government proposals.

Ministers want to bring the offence in line with manslaughter.

Motorists who cause death by speeding, street racing or while on a mobile phone are among those who could face longer sentences.

Do you agree? Should motorists who cause death by dangerous driving face longer sentences? Have your say below.

This has been a long time coming.
The sooner it comes into force, the better.

It depends on the circumstances, anyone with drink, drugs or an electronic device (Mobile, MP3 player, Ecig) distracting them - should get the book at them.
Anyone with an unsafe vehicle should be dealt with on a sliding scale.
Anyone who leaves the scene - hit and run - BOOK AT THEM.
Red Light Runners - Points and Bigger Fines
And the Police should accept video evidence from Dashcams and issue retrospective fines / sentences.

A severe thrashing till they beg for mercy would also be part of the punishment - you know it makes sense.

Of coarse they need longer sentences my sister was killed in a hit and run on the 24th of october. They have not only killed my sister but left 3 children without their mother it's discusting how they can get away with **** sentences something needs to be done

You have all my sympathy Cheryl. My brother was killed in a car crash many years ago. If people realised the terrible pain the families go through they would have more respect when driving vehicles. You never get over it but you learn to accept it with time.

I would throw the book at them, if they are driving in a dangerous or careless manner they should get life because it's ther fault

I am sick of reading or hearing on media nearly every day a motorist has caused death by dangerous driving it was becoming the norm over the years not before time the law has to deal with this very serious offence.

yes it should treated as murder.a motor vehicle driven without consideration to others ie under drink drugs or using mobile device even smoking.

It's a no brainer. It not only takes away loved ones it leaves family destroyed. The stiffer the penalties the better for us all.

My son was killed when a car pulled out on him hitting him on his bike .. not even community service was given ... there was no justice... we as a family have to live with memories as that's all that's left.... a car is a lethal weapon... manslaughter should be the charge not a driving offence charge the law needs changing

If you did the same injuries to a person with a baseball bat then you would get a long sentence but because you use a car as a weapon its not as serious??

Truth is there are some right idiotic and unsafe drivers on the roads, my driving instructor taught me to drive as if I had a baby in the back of my car, sound advice:)
