FORMER SHOPS opposite the May Day Green Market will be demolished from tomorrow to make way for the new library.

The Mayor of Barnsley, Coun Linda Burgess, will officially launch the start of the demolition at 9.30am tomorrow morning.

Coun Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “We’re committed to creating a vibrant, walkable, family friendly town centre full of opportunity and potential. This new facility is the next step in our vision and will be a fantastic asset for local people.

"We’re extremely excited about this next step in making a brighter future, a better Barnsley.”

The demolition work will be completed by Christmas with the building work due to commence in early 2017.

Wasting money on something that won't get used sick

What silly comments as per usual.

I've said it before and I will say it again. The council are wasting circa £5m on the construction of a library and the subsequent fit out. Scandalous.
In two years time they will be closing the district libraries because they will claim that they have no money.

They will have a ceremony for the opening of a paper bag. Already had a demolition ceremony for the offices, then one for opening a carpark, another for opening temp market and another for this.

Half of budget;s been spent on pointless ceremonies

The town center is old and worn down its about time something was done it needs bringing into this century people need to stop living in the past times move on.

Reply Posted by Timewarp on Friday October 28 2016 at 12:55
Spot on, they're all still living in 1984. Remember the mob that chained themselves to the old library? we'll never move on and change perceptions with some of these fools.

Reply Posted by Jacko on Friday October 28 2016 at 17:21
Correct, I don't think people on here have ever left Barnsley. We need to catch up with other towns and cities.

The urban areas where people live are maybe way better than the bigger cities, Barnsley loses out when it comes to the town centre.

Places like Leeds and Sheffield have decent centers, but the urban areas are behind the likes of Barnsley and Doncaster.

Big credit to the council for doing something on this. Might be a small town centre, but we need to make it an attractive one, and this helps.

Here he goes again owd Jacko " i don't think people on here have ever left Barnsley " Still a pompous tool ! he goes to school in Leeds you know .. he knows everything him does Jacko.

Angry Chip on shoulder man.

You need a hobby old chap….

Reply Posted by turbo on Monday October 31 2016 at 17:07
And you need another catch phrase mate .. you used that one last time .. whenever you're found out you use the old chip on line cos you're a snobby prat !

Reply Posted by Jacko on Tuesday November 1 2016 at 12:58
Snobby? I’m far from it.

So take it you didn’t think the town centre needed a bit of modernising?

Not sure I’ve said any different from a lot of people.

Live in Barnsley, in my last year of Uni in Leeds. If you think that makes someone snobby that says more about you than me.

Reply Posted by Avina L'augh on Tuesday November 1 2016 at 14:05
Turbo! Are you truly trying to say that someone from Barnsley who goes all those many, many miles away to Uni in Leeds is a snobby prat....? Students from Barnsley go to universities in England, Scotland, Wales, America etc
Barnsley town centre does need modernising and what's already happened is a start.

I'm responding to "Avina L'augh cos it's really the revered, illustrious well travelled Jacko .. He / you said, and i quote " I don't think people on here have ever left Barnsley " Doesn't that sound snobby to you Jacko ?? it certainly does to me .. you always have to belittle the people of Barnsley with your posts, always trying to impress whoever with your tales of other towns and cities as if your some sort of bloody Alan Whicker .. and you've got the nerve to call me "chip on shoulder man " well at least i've only got one chip .. unlike you who has two ! Oh and i never said Barnsley didn't want modernising .. you made that up. BTW i went to uni in London.

Dear Turbo
It is a sad fact that some people do not ever leave the town. Maybe it is unbelievable to you and maybe it sounds snobbish to state it, but it is true.
I taught in Barnsley for a long time and year after year in my classes there were a lot of children who never left Barnsley, children who never went on a local train to Wakefield, Leeds, Sheffield, Penistone etc They never went to the seaside apart from on school trips.
These former pupils are adults now and have children of their own. Some will travel far and some will stay in their own few streets as a comfort zone.

Dear Jacko, Avina L'augh, Ex teacher and whatever else you like to call yourself .. It's like this owd cock .. ( it's a pity you couldn't attach a file playing brass band Hovis music whilst we read your made up bull sh_it ) why don't you just take a long hard look at yourself and realise you'll never do anything useful in your life cos you're a stuck up snobby lad from Barnsley who thinks he's made it big time ( because you're probably the first in your family that's gone to uni ) with a very severe superiority complex .. that my friend is how it is ..

Reply Posted by Jacko on Friday November 4 2016 at 13:17
Anyone else confused here?

Reply Posted by Ex teacher on Friday November 4 2016 at 13:24
@ Turbo
I was a teacher for 30 years. I think I have done something useful in my life by teaching and I am very content with this. I wasn't the first in my family to go to Uni. I don't think I have made it big time, but I have enjoyed my career. I now do something completely different. This brings me back to Barnsley every few weeks and I think the changes in the town centre are an improvement. Sadly in the real world, it is not bullsh.t to state that a lot of children never leave their few streets/village apart from going to school. I know what I am talking about and it doesn't make me feel superior, it has made me want to be involved in education for many years.
So, the new library will be an asset to the town I think and the regeneration of the town centre including the market will help make the town centre more attractive to residents and visitors.

Oh I see what you mean. It's a pity as he is probably a really interesting person but he doesn't come across well.

Reply Posted by turbo on Monday November 7 2016 at 19:03
My apologies for the confusion Ex teacher, it's just another "tool" in Jacko's box, he's got quite a history of belittling people from Barnsley, and when he gets lets shall we say "some negative feedback " resorts to using another pseudonym .. He just can't help it you see because he's better than the rest of us plebs. His past posts have included " People from Barnsley don't know what they're voting for ( The EU referendum ) People from Barnsley shouldn't have a vote ( presumably cos they're all too thick ). People from Barnsley are racists cos they voted to leave the EU. and the old classic " where do people from Barnsley think the money comes from to rebuild Barnsley " etc etc .. He really thought they had a money tree in Brussels and i'd bet was quite devastated to eventually learn that it was in fact our money that they'd collected and handed back to us in a way that they saw fit .. It was also pointed out to him to look up the word "democracy" .. unfortunately he's obviously been indoctrinated with EU propaganda from a very early age and knows no better. Hope this clears up a few things for you. You're defending a jumped up snob who doesn't even realise the offence he causes, it's obviously normal behaviour for him.

The library gets more use now than its ever done before.people who dont have internet or access to computers are all in the library.kids get by far more homework now compared to what they used to get.so there are alot of school kids use the library.its very close to our huge colleges we now have which the students do use the library alot.people like you brian are just too ignorant to see that important facilities like the library do get alot of use so it was money well spent as its used to educate people who want to be educated.what would you like the money spent on.another 20 pubs that dont get anyone in.or a new nightclub that wont get anyone in.lets face it the council are well aware of where the money needs to be spent and so far so good on what they are spending it on.

Reply Posted by Well said @Brian on Friday October 28 2016 at 17:26
Well said, just because one guy who doesn't use the library says so, it doesn't mean we don't need one.

I mean, come on...... every place of reasonable size has a library. Barnsley with a population which will be far bigger than the last census's population of 240,000. Is a large town so needs modern library.

Reply Posted by Steve on Saturday October 29 2016 at 10:03
So....why knock down buildings and start building new ones, when we need more public toilets around town and area's, £40,000 saved by closing toilets per year, but spending £5m on building a library.

Reply Posted by turbo on Monday October 31 2016 at 19:27
Really ?? We need more toilets ?? WTF ?? you're moaning about building a library and you want more toilets .. are you still in nappies ?

Having read the comments here, it appears that several of you are illiterate and would benefit from spending time in the new library.

And some of you should be banned from interacting with society.

Reply Posted by turbo on Monday October 31 2016 at 08:01
And why would they want to go and "spend some time in the new library " if they were illiterate ??? isn't that what you'd call an oxymoron, you moron.
Get yourself to the new library and use the dictionary yer plank.

Reply Posted by turbo on Monday October 31 2016 at 08:02
Mr Reality check ?? .. more like Mr thick as two short planks.

Reply Posted by Anon on Monday October 31 2016 at 16:42
Libraries can be great places to be. A lot of people who think they are 'illiterate' are dyslexic, they can still enjoy being around books. Even books without words is a start.

Reply Posted by turbo on Monday October 31 2016 at 17:08
I think you missed the point ..

Reply Posted by Jacko on Friday November 4 2016 at 11:03
Posh boy, hahahahahaahahahahahaah.

Snob hahahahahahahaha…….

Far from it.

This all comes down the fact I voted in during the Brexit shizzle, mainly due to work and my studies.

The project I was working with is now scrapped as it was been funded by the EU. Go to London and looked at the many now abandoned cranes and abandoned building works.

Disagreed with your immature thinking and you didn’t like that. Seems I’ve made an impression as I’ve only ever posted a few times on here and you remembered me from months ago.

Just chill out, no time in today’s world disagreeing with people online.

Reply Posted by turbo on Friday November 4 2016 at 12:26
How could i ever forget you .. you're right you really did make an impression .. your arguments for remain were at best infantile .. do you remember how you thought ( and probably still do ) that EU money came from a money tree they planted in Brussels .. how you thought that the EU came up with endless funds to finance the unemployable like you in non jobs ? you're probably the most arrogant jumped up little turd I've ever come across and whenever you post on here as Jacko, Avin L'augh, or Ex teacher,or whoever, belittling the people of Barnsley with your snotty infantile remarks i'll be here waiting to show you up for what you are .. a snobby little half wit self proclaimed deluded posh boy from Barnsley.
