ELSECAR PARK is celebrating after being named as one of the country's favourite parks.

The park claimd the title of 'Nation's Favourite Park' along with ten other finalists from across the UK.

The award, organised by Keep Britain Tidy, aims to find the best Green Flag parks across Britain.

Elsecar Park retained the Green Flag earlier this year for the ninth time and was up against more than 1,700 other parks to pick up this latest award.

Coun Jenny Platts, Cabinet Spokesperson for Communities, said: “I’m thrilled that Elsecar Park has made it into the top ten to be crowned as one of the nation’s favourite parks - it’s an absolutely fantastic achievement.

“We’ve beaten off competition from almost 2,000 parks nationally which goes to show how much people in Barnsley and further afield treasure the park.”

No wonder Lock Park wasn't nominated for any awards! Nice news about Elsecar.

Who the heck is Arnie and what has he (and his Alsatian dog) got to do with this park winning an award.

this is all well and good for elsecar .but what about the other parks in barnsley which are and have been neglected for a number of years ,,especially since park keepers were removed .if this park was not situated where it is [next to the heritage center ] i don't think it would get the attention it receives. if one of our parks can be looked after like elsecar is why not the others, so all barnsley people can have a nice and clean green space .congratulations to all the volunteers that help keep the park as it is .

Well said Mr k.

Many of the other parks across the borough have been badly neglected by Barnsley Council. Perhaps the council should make the same or similar resources available to other parks in the borough.

Arnie was the park keeper for ages. Proper cantankerous fella but kept it in top order, took no rubbish and he had a big alsation he set on ya if you stepped over the line.
