Locals hit out at Houghton Main fly-tipping

The fly-tipping The fly-tipping

ANGRY locals have hit out at fly-tipping at Houghton Main.

Residents discovered a pile of a waste at the side of the Houghton Main miners' memorial yesterday evening (Thursday September 1).

It is one of a number of fly-tipping incidents to hit the borough in recent months.

MP Michael Dugher urged the council to do more to combat the issue last month.

He said: "Fly-tipping is an appalling and growing problem in Barnsley.

"Fly-tipping is not only an eyesore, spoiling our green spaces, but it can also cause real harm to public health and pose serious dangers to people and wild life in the Borough.

“I know how seriously Barnsley Council takes this issue and I am confident they will do everything in their power to combat fly-tipping in our Borough.

“With the new rules in place, the council now has another weapon in its armoury to tackle fly-tipping. Fixed penalty notices should be a strong deterrent and I hope they are used to punish offenders. I would also urge residents to report people."

To silly Sara

Your post is just silly. And a bit nasty too. The memorial was made by people who cared and wanted to leave something to be remembered about their heritage which is a coal mining heritage. You won't get Dan Jarvis posing next to it, fair enough, but you don't want people dumping rubbish on it either. It is wrong. I know people destroy graves, p.ss on memorials, graffiti with nazi insignia and it Is disgusting.

It says, Houghton Main Memorial not mine! It's disrespectful to dump at or on a memorial. Show some respect.

Of course it's a 'pit name' and of course there will never be another coal mine there.
But there is a memorial there, created with pride, so nobody should dump rubbish next to it. Same as war memorials, the Cenotaph and people's graves in cemeteries.
No decent person treats them like a rubbish tip, they are there for people's memories. And you can't seriously say 'get over it' as people might as well dump rubbish at Barnsley Cemetery.

Sara what are you like!
The article is about fly tipping and you're ranting on about coal mines, you've clearly got a grudge somewhere along the line.
Coal mines/miners and related industries and workers helped make Barnsley so don't be so bitter and disrespectful. We've had some great industries and workers sadly now gone in South Yorkshire, steel, brick, sewing, pottery etc etc.
Hang your head in shame.
