Standardised cigarette packaging on sale in Barnsley

The standardised packaging The standardised packaging

THE FIRST cigarettes on sale in new standardised packaging have been spotted in Barnsley.

New laws that came in to force in May gave manufacturers up to a year to switch to drab green packs with bigger health warnings, designed to make smoking less appealing to children and young people.

But just three months in the first packs are starting to be seen here in Barnsley.

Coun Jim Andrews, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health said: ‘‘Two thirds of smokers start smoking before the age of 18. There’s a good body of evidence that standardised packs are less attractive, particularly to young people.

“Plain packaging also makes health warnings more effective and removes the ability of manufacturers to mislead consumers about the effects of smoking on their health

“Creating a smoke-free generation is one of our health priorities so the sight of the plain packs in the borough brings us closer to our goal.”

I know this is suppose to be 'shock tactics' but the fact that you don't know what brand the packet is and you just have to trust the shopkeeper is a bit of worry as like anything in life a person has their favourite brand, if they start smoking them and realise that it isn't what they thought it was the shopkeeper ain't going to take them back as they have been started, thus an expensive mistake!

@Victoria

Smoking is an expensive mistake, full stop. it doesn't matter what brand you smoke, it will still give you lung cancer.

Plain packed or not if someone wants to go to the shop for a pack of fags they would not be bothered about the packet I buy them to smoke them not to look at pack

It's the individual's choice to smoke

End of story

i completely agree with you steve and with Stephen Arnold, also in my opinion whats on the pic above looks more like its been caused buy diabetes (i know smoking dose not help with diabetes) but that person my have never smoked how do people know? also people get in trouble for their kids watching programs that are unsuitable for the child's age as the program may damage them mentally ect.. so what will pictures like that do to 4 year olds who see the packs

I'm a smoker myself and started at the age of 13 im now 26 and have never stopped, i have tried all but everything to try stop, but have failed to do so, but, the packet of the cigarettes is at no interest to me what so ever its whats inside the pack i am bothered about so i very much doubt it will put young people off from smoking, especially young kids this day an age as mostly they only do it to show off as they think it makes them look big/cool so the packets are not going to bother them in the slightest. my opinion anyways.
