Westway will remain closed this weekend

Thursday August 25 2016

The fire The fire

BARNSLEY Council says Westway will remain closed this weekend.

The council has advised fans travelling to Oakwell to see Barnsley take on Rotherham to factor the closure into their journey.

The road has been closed since last Thursday's (August 18) fire at Chicago Rock.

A spokesperson said: "Traffic delays are expected. Pedestrians are also reminded that a cordon is in place in this area.

"Council managers responsible for dealing with this incident emphasise that minimising any risk to the health and safety of members of the public is vitally important."

If this was in a major city it would have been knocked down by now for safety reasons so that surrounding roads & businesses can get back to normal. It is/was a listed building, but it is not that special.

It's not in a major city though, is it. A derelict building in a run down part of Barnsley has been gutted and before too long it will be demolished. It is very important that a correct assessment of what caused the fire is established especially as people accuse the new owners of starting the fire and others accuse competitors or fed up neighbouring businesses of doing so. The likely cause of the fire will be established and it's crucial for insurance etc

Thank you for the information.

My family and I tried to get to “Morrisons” on Wednesday and gave up, due to the diversion signs being so poorly displayed. They only appeared to make any sense, to most drivers, when drivers were actually on top of the blocked off roads.

We were involved in a fracas as one frustrated driver, well out of order in my view, who gave me an oral pounding for something out of my control and for something I had not done.

These arguments can easily be avoided with better signage.

Needless to say, it is going to be some time before we go to “Morrisons again.”

Go up Sheffield road, turn right at crossroads, turn right again follow the road and you cant miss it? To be fair if you cant navigate to Morrisons using your own initiative please sell your car and stay off the roads. Thanks

Is it true that roads around the world trade centre were opened after 2 days?

Reply Posted by Abc on Friday August 26 2016 at 12:47
@Gavin Moore
No it's not true that roads around the world trade centre were opened after 2 days.
The national urgency to get New York up and running after an unbelievable terrorist atrocity is one thing. The need to sort out the burned out former Coop, former night club and establish the cause is another.

Reply Posted by David on Thursday August 25 2016 at 18:56
Wikipedia suggests it was 13 October before streetshe in New York were re-opened. Although the two events are incomparable, the basic premise is the same - public safety. That and it's potentially a crime scene.

Cannot believe this road is still closed trying other routes to get home at night around 5.00pm is a nightmare, why is this vital road still closed its a joke...

Guessing that 'no' means 'know' and 'been' means 'being' and 'an' means 'a'. Maybe Peter isn't the 'only joke' and 'u r t fool' wasn't one of today's Barnsley GCSE successes.

I agree with you Mick, the standard of prose on this forum is truly appalling ..even the curiously named poster " Grammar Police " is obviously grammatically retarded.

Reply Posted by Mick on Friday August 26 2016 at 08:57
Most people have the mental and emotional capacity to be interested in more than one news story at a time. I'm not concerned about the ease of getting home. My interest is in the economic impact on the town as shoppers choose to go elsewhere. As others have said, priority should be given to getting back to normal.

''The standard of prose''? That line , in itself is poor English .My, I am so relieved that my children were educated outside of Barnsley. My own English and P.E teacher is now a playwright and so, I am well placed to correct such errors as are to be found here.

This road should be open. The building itself brings no business or income into this town at all. The businesses around it are the ones that fund the town and because of the road closure these businesses are suffering. Taxi drivers, delivery drivers and people travelling from one side of town to another are struggling. The people who live on the back streets are now inundated with constant rat run traffic making their once quiet streets like the M1. To keep it closed during a football match weekend is a absolute joke.

Reply Posted by Jacko on Wednesday August 31 2016 at 13:38
Based on a structural assessment, by experts obviously.

Sorry but safety has to be no.1 priority, if anything goes wrong with the demolition.

Experts will have created an exclusion zone with Westway will currently be in.

Reply Posted by Ralph on Friday August 26 2016 at 09:52
I don't understand why both directions are closed to traffic. Surely from the Alhambra round about to Townend is far enough away to be safe enough whatever the circumstances even if the rest of the building were to be demolished.

The road is CLOSED , Now get on with your life. It isn't the end of the world. Soon be back to normal.

Let's all get together with the council to raise money to save this special building.Trust fund, shares lottery etc.Other buildings have been saved with extensive fire damage ie York Minster.Message to Bsly council pull out all stops to save it.

Reply Posted by Liam Riley on Friday August 26 2016 at 13:27
WHY? How can you compare a rundown eyesore to York Minster, Knock it down, Nobody was bothered about the place before, hence why it was in a sorry state,

Reply Posted by Tessa on Friday August 26 2016 at 14:04
Well said to you.....

Reply Posted by D on Friday August 26 2016 at 15:48
Why on earth is it worth saving? Pull it down, make it safe open westway!

Reply Posted by D on Friday August 26 2016 at 15:47
Glad its coming down, it was a right eyesore.

Reply Posted by M rushforth on Friday August 26 2016 at 17:49
To all those who want it pulled down. The reason it was run down before the fire is the council say they havnt the money but they find it for other things. There is no comparison with York Minster true but this town has lost too many historic buildings. If you can't see the building as iconic then you don't appreciate old buildings and history.Other towns and city's have restoration and regeneration. Our council doesn't adhere to restoration only let them get beyond repair and then pull them down.

Reply Posted by geoff on Friday August 26 2016 at 18:29
The building wasn't owned by the council

Reply Posted by Facts right on Friday August 26 2016 at 18:01
The building was'nt council owned. It was bought by a buisness developer who had plans to do good things with it.but by all accounts took on more than he could handle and did an insurance job to claw back his money.nothing to do with council has'nt got money to restore it cos it didnt belong to them in the first place.no restoration team on the planet could bring that back from the ashes.its a death trap that needs pulling down.the council are spending nearly all of their money redeveloping the town center.which is an eyesore.give them some credit for christ sake.they cant please everyone.no one cared about it before so why act botherd now.if you want historic town then go to york.barnsley is way past historic.they're doing the best they can with what little they've got.now get over for god sake.

Wearebarnsley ..... Wearebackward

Reply Posted by Claire on Friday August 26 2016 at 21:58
The road is closed. Someone has decided it will be and that's the way it is. It's a pain in the arse getting to work with Westway closed and Morrisons takes a couple of minute more to get to. But sometimes life just doesn't go to plan! Its a shame Barnsley is losing another classic building but if we're all being honest, we've not noticed the old Co-op until it was in the news. Half of us don't have parents old enough to remember it! This fire incident has just been a bugger of a week that none of us will remember this time next year. Thanks also to the firemen ( or whatever I'm supposed to call them ) - we all forget you 'til you're needed.

Reply Posted by alf on Saturday August 27 2016 at 02:14
why are people complaining about westway been closed? westway hasn't always been there. which way did drivers go then.
another point I would like to make is that Chicago rock building is now unsafe if westway was open and it collapsed as you were driving past and and it seriously hurt you or your family would you still feel the same about it ? I think not so stop thinking about your self and find another route. I drive for a living and its not that hard inconvienient yes but not hard

Reply Posted by Matt on Saturday August 27 2016 at 11:16
Once again the comments section is full of ill-informed and badly spelled rants.

The building is in danger of collapse. Collapsing buildings don't fall into a tidy heap and debris could easily reach the other side of Westway. Should we risk killing people just because there's a match on? The comparison with the Italian earthquake should be a sobering one. Adding 5 minutes into a drive through town is no cause for complaint.

I don't understand what's the point of going online and correcting people's spelling and grammar. Most people can understand what most people post....Some people are excellent spellers and writers, some people are not. If people can read their opinions, that's all that matters.
Why am I even posting this? because I have an hour to spare while waiting for a cab to the airport for my hols!

Fact building was a eye sore a **** house when it was trading. Knock the ****** down and we can all get back to reality.

Let's face it if you was a investor or wanting to invest in Barnsley, driving along Westway for the first time and seeing that **** hole before it burnt down.

Would you invest your money I think not.
