Barnsley expected to feature in benefits programme

Tuesday August 16 2016

BARNSLEY is expected to feature in a programme about benefits on Channel 4 tomorrow night.

Britain’s Benefit Tenants aims to highlight the social housing crisis by going behind the scenes with letting agents who have tenants who are on benefits.

Andrew Dyke, from Goldthorpe-based agency 2 Let 4 Sale, has been taking part in filming for the last six months.

“Although we’re based in Goldthorpe, and there has been filming in the village, it isn’t just about Goldthorpe at all, and we’ve been filming across the Barnsley area and Doncaster too," he said.

“It’s not about the village at all, it’s about the problems faced day-to-day by letting agencies, and how the current benefits system is failing a lot of people.

“It’s highlighting the issues both tenants and landlords have with the recent changes and introduction of universal credit, benefits caps and sanctioning.”

The programme is on tomorrow night (Wednesday August 17) at 9pm, on Channel 4.

Its about time the benefit tenants stopped getting there houses paid for plus everything else they go around claiming.if they got turfed out of their homes through housing benefit being stopped it might give them some insentive to get off their arses and get a job.its about tome its was capped or sanctioned.theyve had it far too cushty for far too long.enoughs enough.wouldnt rent my home to no one.juat gets trashed through dole dossing scumbags that treat homes has a party house for them and their mates to get wrecked every other night.

Why tar everyone with the same brush? These programs are designed to put a divide there and always feature the rougher ones ,why not go into a home where there are valid reasons why they get housing benefit ,not all are the same

It's about time they cut benefits so that people were forced to look for work. Benefits should be a safety net, not a lifestyle choice.

Just what the people of Barnsley and its image needs Channel 4 making a mockery of us again like they did during the brexit campaign news clips.

@why do we let it happen

I think the Brexit news items made Barnsley ripe for getting held up as a mockery along with the very poor achievement in education, it makes Barnsley seem to be full of quite stupid people. Perhaps somebody with a different view point and who is media savvy could do some publicity? But as soon as anything positive comes up, there are people wading in with 'wasting our money' blablabla. Eg re the new library, some of the reactions were like 'I've read a book, why do I need to read another one?' I think a certain type of person now thinks, with Brexit, they can stop ranting about all 'foreigners' and start picking on all people on benefits. It makes them feel superior to slag off people who are more needy.

Most people in my area that are on benefits sleep most of the day until it's time to go out to buy their booze drugs and fags then party all night stilling on to the streets arguing and shouting at the top of their voices, proper hard working people shouldn't have to put up with this behaviour.

Letting agencies are in it for profit they are a business. Their tenants in my opinion should be doing community service ie litter picking in return for free rents. Taxpayers have to live within their means so should Benefit claimants or work

So everyone claiming housing benefit is a dole dossing scumbag that has house parties everynight and has no respect for anything?! Yes some people do extract the urine but not everyone. The system is there for a reason, benefits have been capped no doubt you have been living in some other universe for years. So if someone has to stop working through ill health, is made redundant, loses their own home and ends up on benefits they should be living on the streets?! Maybe we should bin off the nhs while we're at it, abolish free education and state pensions. I've been on both sides of the fence before you assume that i'm a lazy dole claiming scumbag, i don't live in a pigsty, never had house parties and trashed the place whether i was getting housing benefit or not. Everyone's circumstances are different and you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover!

@b. i dont know what planet you live on.but did you see last weeks programme.and all the excuses the landlords come across and the shear damage and headaches they have to go through by letting houses out to folk on benefit.everyone that featured in that programme was all cut from the same cloth.house partys nuisance to their neighbours.houses trashed.ect ect.excuses to why they havent paid their rent.chance after chance given.and still let their landlords down.this is what im explaining.dont tell me i live in a different universe when i see it every other day by this ever getting lazier generation.people claiming disabilitys when their out in town at night pubbing and clubbing.claiming for everything all b3cause they think the world owes them a living.

John your an idiot mate my dad always worked until the last 6 years of his life in which he became very unwell and had to claim housing benefit amongst other things, so that makes him a scumbag who thinks the world owes him a living yes? Don't tar everyone with the same brush

It starts with the older generation im afraid, especially in goldthorpe and surrounding areas. There are so many families that have never worked and have lived their lives getting everything for nothing the younger generation have been taught how to play the system so will play it. There are lots of families that are on benefits through no fault of their own and find it bloody hard but those that are on it from cradle to grave get by very well. There are people on benefits that keep a lovely house and their kids are well mannered and clean but there are some that are just scruffy and their kids are wild and thats what these programmes thrive on.

Its all down to the up bringing.expecters....god help next generation, society has to deal with. Should be streets designated for the such, I dont mean people on benefits in general , but the ones who have no respect, use and abuse..welfare way ,welfare walk, imavin avenue, scrubbers cresent etc.

@abc I'm very proud to be from Barnsley and would love to see it and its people thrive its just getting more and more hard to say that I am proud of this town when faced with the small mindedness of the few which seem to get highlighted the most. We have a lot of very talented and hard working people in this town that should voice there intelligent opinion instead of the narrow minded ones we hear all so often.
