A BARNSLEY landlord has been fined £2,000 for failing to make repairs to a rented property he owned in Wombwell.

John Jessop, 52, from Cressbrook in Buxton, was ordered to pay the fine after he was convicted at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court for non-compliance with an improvement notice.

In 2014, council officers conducted an inspection of the tenanted property at 54 Blyth Street in Wombwell, and discovered a range of hazards.

These included the property having no handrail and inappropriate kitchen facilities to prepare and cook food. As a result, Mr Jessop had been ordered to make repairs.

After the work was not carried out, Jessop was prosecuted for failure to comply with the notices.

Coun Jenny Platts, Cabinet Spokesperson for Communities, said: "There are lots of excellent landlords in Barnsley who provide good quality housing needed by local people.

"Unfortunately some landlords don’t follow the standards expected and give all housing providers a bad name. The council has a duty to make sure landlords offer safe and decent quality housing and where landlords fail to comply with the rules, we will not hesitate in taking legal action.”
