Scam mail warning from Trading Standards

Scam mail received by a Barnsley resident Scam mail received by a Barnsley resident

BARNSLEY Trading Standards have warned locals to be on the lookout for scam mail after discovering over 350 Barnsley residents have been recently conned out of money.

A countrywide initiative found over 350 people have responded to scam mail in Barnsley recently. Many of the locals were elderly and living alone.

In nearly all cases, it was found that the victim sent money in response to the scam mail they received, totalling hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

Some locals have been receiving more than ten letters a day from companies stating they have won prizes such as cars, cash, cruises or electrical goods - and that they onlu need to pay a small admin fee to claim them.

Experts say the fee to claim the prize is small enough to tempt the victims in the hope that they receive the prize.

However, the prizes never arrive.

If you feel that you have been a victim of scam mail, or know someone who may be, you can report this to Barnsley Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice Consumer Service Helpline on 08454 040506.

Roy - apparently 350 elderly people in Barnsley have fallen for the scam so advice from 'John' is worth reading, especially if you are elderly or vulnerable.

John, it is heart breaking for the elderly when they get conned, especially as they try so hard to stay independent, deal with their own mail etc in addition they get bored and get drawn into things....we have to look after our elderly and vulnerable, they are precious.
