Police have warned locals to be on the lookout for bogus callers Police have warned locals to be on the lookout for bogus callers

POLICE have warned locals to be on the lookout for bogus door knockers after a man claiming to be from a care home robbed a pensioner of his jewellery.

On Wednesday (July 13), police were called to reports of a burglary in Shafton, after an unknown man visited the property of an 81-year-old in Hawthorne Way, claiming he was from a care home.

The stranger is alleged to have asked for jewellery from the pensioner, saying this was standard procedure.

The jewellery included a gold bracelet that was engraved, a gold chain with a gold cross pendant with the engraving ‘God Bless You Shirley’ and another chain with a gold pendant in the shape of the letter ‘S’.

The suspect is described as being white, in his 30s, of medium build with short brown hair. He spoke with a Yorkshire accent.

Police are reminding the public of the dangers of bogus door knockers, and the importance of confirming the identity of those who call at your door.

Officers are also keen to hear from anyone living in  Barnsley who may have witnessed the suspicious activity or who may have been offered the jewellery for sale.

Anyone with information should call 101 or email enquiries@southyorks.pnn.police.uk. For the Barnsley burglary, quote incident number 244 of 13 July 2016.

Posters, please read the third line down, last word? It clearly says MAN! Not woman! Still sad and thief needs catching. The jewelry was most likely his wife's.

Is it fair to say this poor man has a wife who recently went into a care home? As otherwise somebody knocking on the door asking for personal effects saying it was standard procedure doesn't make any sense. if so, everybody should be looking at someone who knows an elderly lady has gone into a care home and I expect that's what the police are doing.
Absolute scum, hope they are caught.
