A BARNSLEY man has died following a collision on the M1 in the early hours of this morning.

Wayne Milnthorpe, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, between junctions 35 and 35A of the northbound carriageway, at around 1.40am this morning (Tuesday July 12).

Police believe Mr Milnthorpe lost control of the black Ford Fiesta and collided with the nearside barrier. The car then came to a stop in the first lane of the motorway, where it was involved in a further collision with a white Iveco LGV. The driver of the LGV did not suffer any injuries.

Inspector Steve Askham said: “We believe there are a number of potential witnesses to this tragic incident and we are very keen to speak with them. CCTV footage shows a number of vehicles on the motorway around the time of the incident, who are very likely to have witnessed either the first collision, or the second one involving the LGV, and I would encourage them to please come forward with any information.”

The M1 was closed for a number of hours while officers investigated the scene.

If you witnessed the Fiesta on the motorway before the collision, the actual incident itself, or the collision involving the LGV, please call 101 quoting incident number 71 of 12 July 2016.
